Kings of the Crease

When it comes to NHL goalies, you immediately think, Martin Brodeur. But there is another goalie in the NHL that is really making a name for themselves. His name is Roberto Luongo. Now, these 2 goalies have almost nothing in common. One plays in the Eastern Conference while the other plays in the West. They have completely different styles of goal tending, and ones in his 30's while the other is in his 20's. But these goalies have 1 thing in common. They are both going for a seemingly impossible record.

These goalies are playing to beat Bernie Parent's record of 47 wins in a season, done by Parent in the season of 1973-74. Brodeur isn't letting the hype get to him though as he doesn't think he can get 3 more wins by the end of the season. Parent was sat down to talk about Brodeur in a ESPN interview.

"I consider Brodeur to be the best in the league right now. Why do I like him as a goalie? One is his passion for the game. He's almost 35, right? And still, you see how he competes on the ice, see his desire on every shot. That's what keeps you young in this game, the passion and pride to play and to be good and to win.

"So that's one reason. But I guess the main one would be that he's … French!" Parent said laughing.

As the 2006-2007 season comes to a conclusion, both goalie's teams have the possibility to go far in the playoffs. As of Saturday morning, both goalies have 45 wins, but Brodeur has played 1 more game to give Luongo 5 games to catch Parent.

I believe that Luongo will eventually beat Parent's record and Brodeur will tie. I think that Luongo has a much better chance than Brodeur.

A very interesting possibility is if both the Canucks (Luongo's team), and the Devils (Brodeur's team) make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. It will be a goal tending match up greater than the Roy - Vanbiesbrouck battle of 1995-1996.

Sid the Kid

It's amazing what he's done at only 19. Pittsburgh Penguin's Sidney Crosby right now is on pace to win the Art Ross trophy as leading scorer in the league. He also has been the face of the NHL since he came into the league as he has been in multiple NHL and NIKE commercials. One more thing he's done is bring some hockey to not only Pittsburgh, but all of U.S.A as a Boston - Pittsburgh game on NBC had higher T.V ratings than a Phoenix Suns NBA game on ABC. At 19 he has made great strides and will only get better.

He started this year as many predicted scoring a goal and 1 assist in win over Philadelphia. He then went in a sort of slump he only got points in 1 of his next 4 games. But then in mid October, Crosby went on a scoring streak as he got 15 points in his next 8 games. In November, Crosby had 7 out of 11 games where he scored 2 or more points. In December Sid scored 26 points in 14 games to grab all of the NHL's attention. Crosby would continue on this pace to get to an eventual 116 points as of March 30th! That gave him a 11 point cushion on 2nd place Joe Thorton in the NHL Art Ross trophy race!

If Crosby continues on this pace he will become the youngest player ever to lead the league in scoring. The scary thing about him is that he is only 19! He will get better which will be amazing to watch. He may have a great chance off hitting those 150 and 200 point marks that only legends like Lemieux and Gretzky have been able to achieve. It will be fun to see how he grows up and matures on the ice.

New Commissioner For CFL

Today, the CFL introduced the new commissioner of the league. Mark Cohon.

Just a while ago, Cohon, son of McDonald's of Canada founder George Cohan was given a 5-year deal to commission the CFL. The 41-year old is actually one of the youngest commissioners ever as the average age for one is 54. Cohan has already played big parts in the running of NBA and the MLB, and for that reason, many people are saying he is perfect for the job.

''On the one hand you want experience and leadership, on the other hand you want someone who understands the demographics we're trying to approach,'' said Hamilton Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young, a member of the league's search committee. ''There's some very talented 70-year-olds we considered for the job, but how well they understand the 20-year-olds today is the challenge for them. Mark's great strength is that he understands both.''

That was just one of the many quote about Cohan and how he is great for the job.

Cohan answered a series of questions on Wednesday, and seemed very confident in what he's doing.

''I feel at some point, as I get into it, I can really make a difference,'' Cohon said after a news conference. ''I really think I can help this league grow.

''I don't have all the answers but I think that was a part of it.''

Huet To Return?

The Montreal Canadiens are in a playoff race. That's all it is. 6 teams, 3 playoff spots. May the best team win. But Montreal may have a big boost to their lineup by the end of the week.

#1 goalie for the Montreal Canadiens Cristobal Huet has been out more than a month with a tear in his left hamstring, an injury he suffered when saving an eventual goal against the New Jersey Devils on February 14th. As the results of tests on his hamstring came back, Huet was not expected to come back any time during the regular season.

But just over a week ago, Huet started skating again. As he started taking shots he looked in good form, good enough that he participated in a full practice on Monday. He was looking so good, that he may play in one of the Habs back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against either the Sabres or Sens. Not 2 very good choices if a goalie is just coming back from an injury.

''It's possible but I want to make sure I'm ready before I make a decision to come back,'' Huet said Tuesday. ''I want to get some shots and see how I feel. I don't want to put the team in a hole.''

Huet isn't sure if he should return or not as he is unsure about the risk of re-injuring that hamstring. ''It's close to being healed,'' he said. ''But there's some damage close to the injury because of the work we put on the leg to come back this quick. That's why I have to see a doctor and figure that out before the weekend.''

One question to ponder about the Habs is, when Huet returns, who will be the backup?! Aebischer or Halak?

Saturday Night Hockey

Saturday night, 5 Canadian hockey teams were playing. 2 of those teams are fighting for the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. For those 2 teams, Saturday's game was the most important of the season. After some early games, both the NY Islanders and the NY Rangers won to get 2 points closer to that 8th spot in the Conference. That meant that the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens had to win their games to keep up with New York.

In the national game, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Buffalo Sabres. The Leafs were coming off a 3rd period collapse to the Sabres on Friday that saw Buffalo score 4 unanswered goals to win 5-4. The Leafs though were looking for redemption at home.

The Leafs came out strong as they drew an early penalty as they were on the attack. On that powerplay Darcy Tucker potted his 23th off a beautiful pass from Kyle Wellwood. Toronto looked to go into the intermission with the lead, but with Andrew Raycroft screened, Jochen Hecht scored to tie it up. The Leafs didn't get down as they came out of the break with intensity. 1st, Darcy Tucker scored his 2nd of the game to give the Leafs the lead, and then Carlo Colaiacovo scored to give Toronto a 2 goal lead. The Leafs went into the 2nd period break with the shots 27-11 for the Leafs. In the 3rd the Leafs' Nik Antropov scored to give the Toronto a 3 goal lead. This time, the Leafs did not give up that lead as they got a crucial 2 points from this game. Toronto is now 11th in the Eastern Conference and just 2 points behind 8th place Carolina while the Sabres are 1st in the Eastern Conference and tied with Nashville for #1 in the league.

In Montreal's game, the Canadiens faced off against the Eastern Conference spoiler, the Washington Capitals.

The Caps come out good as Chris Clark scored his 29th just 5:53 into the game. But the Habs came back tieing the game up just 3:06 after Washington scored courtesy of Alex Kovalev. In the 2nd the Habs grabbed the leead as Kovalev scored his 2nd of the game. Then Montreal got a 2 goal lead when Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens. The 2nd ended with Montreal up 3-1. In the 3rd, the Canadiens sealed it as Micheal Ryder scored his 25th of the season. Montreal has now won 6 of 10 and are 9th in the Eastern Conference. The Caps are 14th in the Conference and out of playoff contention.

In the final Eastern Canadian game of the night, the Ottawa Senators faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Sens dominated this one from the get go.

The 1st goal of the game was scored 2:38 in by the Senators' Joe Corvo. Then the Lightning's Dan Boyle tied it up on the powerplay. But before the period could end Daniel Alfredsson scored his 27th to grab the lead. In the 2nd, Dan Boyle tied it up again, this time on 5-5. From then on the Sens dominated. Before the 3rd the Senators scored 2 from Dany Heatley and Christoph Schubert. In the 3rd Ottawa scored 3 goals to get a 5 goal lead. The Lightning could not come back from that as the Sens took this one 7-2. Ottawa is now 4th in the Eastern Conference and have clinched a playoff spot while the Lightning are 7th in the Conference.

In the final Canadian game of the night, the Edmonton Oilers faced the Nashville Predators in the Oilers last home game of the season.

The only goal of the 1st was scored by Nashville's Alexander Radulov. In the 2nd Shea Webber and Ryan Suter both scored to give the Preds the 3 goal lead. In the 3rd Nashville scored again from Vernon Fiddler. The Oilers have now lost 17 out of their last 19 and are out of playoff contention while Nashville is tied for 1st in the league in points.

2007 MLB Season Preview

"This is the year." That's what many teams are saying right now as the 2007 MLB season is almost underway. But as we all know, not every team that thinks they have a shot can win it. Right now I'm going to weed out the fakers, reveal the contenders and see who's the favorite to win the 2007 MLB Season and World Series. I will go through every division, every league and predict my champion.

2007 American League Preview



2007 AL West Preview:

The west has the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. The Mariners and Rangers I think will not do very good as neither team has really made a push to be better. The division will probably come down to the A's and the Angels. Last year the A's beat the Angels to win the division, and the Angels have not made any off-season acquisitions that would make them any better. Oakland however has improved signing catcher Mike Piazza and gold-glove winner Shannon Stewert. Even with Frank Thomas gone, I think the Oakland Athletics will the AL West.

2007 AL Central Preview:

The central consists of the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Indians, the Detroit Tigers, the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals. I believe that the division will come down to the Tigers and Twins. The Twins didn't really lose or sign anyone important in the off-season while the Tigers got veteran Gary Sheffield from the Yankees. The Tigers also have young pitchers like Justin Verlander growing up, so I think the Detroit Tigers will come out with the division.

2007 AL East Preview:

In the AL East, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles play. Other than the Devil Rays and the Orioles, the division should be pretty tight. The reigning AL East champ New York Yankees look good yet again this year as they have added Andy Pettitte in place of Randy Johnson for this year. Trade deadline acquisition Bobby Abreu is back again as he played amazing for the Yanks in his few games last season. The other 2 teams in the east are the Red Sox and Blue Jays. Both teams have a good chance to do something in the division as both have added great players to their lineup. The Jays have acquired DH Frank Thomas and SS Royce Clayton while the Sox signed Julio Lugo and Japanese pitching sensation Daisuke Matsuzaka. It will be close, but I think the Yankees will get another division title.

AL Wild-Card Preview:

To me, this one is a no-brainier. With all the 2nd place teams fighting for the wild-card, I think the Minnesota Twins would easily win the wild-card. The Blue Jays and the Angels don't have the talent of the Twins, so I think Minnesota will pull out the wild-card.

American League Champion Preview:

I believe that both the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees will face each-other in the ALCS. I also believe that the Tigers will win that series as they have better talent on their team with Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, Ivan Rodriguez and Kenny Rogers. The Yankees can't match up to players like that and other aspects of the Tigers game.

2007 National League Preview

2007 NL West Preview:

The teams in this division are the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants. This really is any one's division as there is no big power that can really win 90 - 100 games. It will be close, but the division will ultimately come down to the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks have added Randy Johnson, but have lost Luis Gonzalez while the Dodgers picked up Gonzalez, but lost Eric Gagne. I think the Dodgers will come out with the division again, just because the Diamondbacks haven't added anyone that can really change a game in their favor.

2007 NL Central Preview:

The Chicago Cubs, St.Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Houton Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates play in this division. The Cubs have the possibility to win the division as they signed Ted Lilly and Alfonso Soriano this off-season. The Astros also could be good, but have lost one of their few good pitchers in Andy Pettitte, so they will really have to play inspired baseball to win the division. I really think though that the St. Louis Cardinals will win this division as they have almost the exact same team as they did last year.

2007 NL East Preview:

The teams in this division are the Atlanta Braves, the New York Mets, the Florida Marlins, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals. This division should be locked up pretty early by the Mets as they have only gotten better in the off-season. No other team in the division has the talent of the Mets. If any team were to catch them though, I think it would be the Braves as they had 15 straight division titles before the Mets win last year.

National League Champion Preview:

In the 1st round of the NL playoffs, the Cubs and the Dodgers will be knocked out leaving the Cardinals and the Mets. I believe that the Mets will take revenge on the Cards for last year and win the National League. With all of the young players they have, they can't lose. This leaves the Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets to play for the title.

World Series Preview:

It will be a very tight World Series as I believe both teams are very alike in their players and style of play. In a 7th game, I think that the Detroit Tigers will win the Series. It is very tough to tell who would win that match-up.

So those are my picks for this year to win the divisions, leagues and the World Series. Hopefully it will be a great year full of surprises, suspense and thrills

Raps vs Magic

Going into Wednesday night, the Toronto Raptors had lost 2 straight games and got more bad news as rookie sensation Andrea Bargnani had an emergency appendectomy early Wednesday morning. But that did not phase the Raps as it was an awesome game against the Orlando Magic.

The Raptors had the Magic's number all game as they got the lead early and did not give it up for the rest of the game. The Magic shot very poorly missing shot after shot. Even with the Magic playing poorly, the Raps weren't playing any better as Chris Bosh was the only one really doing anything. After 3 back and forth quarters the 4th started. The Raps opened the 4th with a 7-0 run, but Orlando came back to make it 88-84 with 20.9 seconds left. That was as close as the Magic would get as Juan Dixon netted 4 free throws late to seal the win.

Chris Bosh had 34 points and 16 boards in the game scoring his last 2 to the MVP chant of the ACC crowd. The Raptors are now 4th in the Eastern Conference and 6 games ahead of New Jersey for the division lead while the Magic are in 8th spot in the conference and 7.5 games behind Southeast Division leader Washington.

Tootoo Suspended 5 Games For Hit On Robidas

The NHL has made great strides in past years in terms of bringing down dirty play and overall disrespect for other players. And when players do do something to another player, the league comes down hard on him. An example is Chris Simon. Just 2 weeks ago Simon hit the Rangers Ryan Hollweg in the face with his stick. The league suspended Simon for the rest of the season and playoffs which made it the longest NHL suspension ever. Another ugly incident happened a few days ago and the league showed no mercy suspending him as well.

The Nashville Predators Jordan Tootoo was suspended 5 games on Sunday for his sucker punch on Stars defenceman Stephane Robidas. The puch knocked Robidas out and was carried of in a stretcher during a Saturday game involving Nashville and Dallas. The result of the punch is a concussion and a week in the press box for Robidas.

Tootoo, 24, has three goals, four assists and 104 penalty minutes in 61 games this season. Robidas, 30, has 17 assists and 82 penalty minutes in 71 games this season.

Saturday Night Hockey

Yesterday was Hockey Night In Canada. In the Eastern Conference, there is a race going on for the 8th and final playoff spot in that conference, and yesterday, many teams looked like they really wanted that playoff spot.

In the 1st game, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Montreal Canadiens in a key matchup for each team as they were only separated by 1 point going into the game.

Early in the game, call-up Andrei Kostitsyn scored his 1st NHL goal to give the Habs the lead. Then, on the powerplay, Kyle Wellwood potted his 10th to tie the game up. The period was capped off by a Darcy Tucker and Francis Bouillon fight at 13:42 of the period. In the 2nd, Saku Koivu scored his 19th and 5th against the Leafs togive Montreal the lead. In the 3rd period, the team were playing 4-4. Darcy Tucker stormed up the ice and dropped it to Kyle Wellwood. He then dropped it to Pavel Kubina who wired it passed Halak to tie up the game 2-2. The game went scoreless for the rest of the 3rd and went into O.T. In that overtime period, both teams pressed to end the game. Shot after shot it looked like the game might end, but the goalies saned their teams. The game then went into a shootout. In the shootout, the 1st 3 shooters missed to give way to Mats Sundin. He came in and wired one top shelf to give the Leafs the 1-0 lead in the shootout. Saku Koivu then had to score to keep the Habs in the game. He made about 5 moves and beat Raycroft to prolong the game. After a miss by the Leafs, Andrei Kostitsyn came in and scored to give the Habs the lead. It was up Darcy Tucker to tie it up. He came in and got stopped by Halak for the Canadiens to win it. The Habs are now 11th in the Eastern Conference with 78 points and the Leafs are 10th in the Conference with 78 points.

In the last Eastern Conference Canadian game of the night, the Ottawa Senators faced the Philadelphia Flyers in a game that the Sens supposedly should have blown out.

The game started with both teams exchanging late 1st period goals After a period that saw Mike Comrie give the Sens the lead, the 3rd started. In the 3rd, Peter Schaefer scored 09:42 into the period to give the Sens a 2 goal lead. The Flyers though looked to play spoiler as Derian Hatcher scored late in the game to give the Flyers a chance to tie it. But the Flyers couldn't score another as the Ottawa Senators won another game at home. The Senators are now 4th place in the Eastern Conference but only 1 point a head of 5th Pittsburgh while the Flyers are still last in the league.

Pavel Datsyuk opened the scoring in the game just 06:05 into the game on a powerplay to give the Wings a 1 goal lead. Then, Bryon Smolinski tied it up 5 minutes after Datsyuk's goal. In the 2nd, the Canucks started pulling away from the Wings as they scored 2 goals in the period courtesy of Lucas Krajicek and Brendan Morrison. In the 3rd period the Red Wings looked to tie it up as they threw shot after shot at MVP candidate Roberto Luongo, but Luongo stopped them all. Trever Linden added a late goal as the Canucks won a huge game against the best team in the league. The win gives the Canucks a bigger lead in the Northwest Division and sit 3rd in the Western Conference while Detroit is 4th in the Conference, just 1 points behind league leader Nashville.

In another Western Conference game, the slumping Edmonton Oilers faced the St. Louis Blues.The Oilers looked to stop a 9 game losing streak that started when Ryan Smyth was traded to the NY Islanders.

The game started out slow in the 1st as there was no scoring early, but then with about 3 minutes left in the period, Peter Cajanek scored to give the Blues the lead. But the Oilers came back scoring just 00:40 after Cajanek's goal. The only goal of the 2nd came from the stick of Jeff Woywitka for the Blues to garb the lead 2-1. In the 3rd, the Oilers tied up the game as Shawn Horcoff scored on the powerplay with just over 10 minutes left in the period. The game went scoreless until overtime. In that overtime period, former Oiler Eric Brewer scored in between the legs of Roloson to grab the win. The Oilers have now dropped 10 straight since losing Smyth and are 11th in the Western Conference with 67 points. The Blues however are a head of the Oilers with 72 points.

In the final Canadian game of the night, the Calgary Flames faced the Minnesota Wild

The Flames came out strong scoring just 00:32 into the game. The Flames held that lead until the 18:03 mark of the period as Marion Gaborik scored to tie up the game. After the teams exchanged goals in the 2nd, the 3rd started with the game notted up at 2. In the 3rd, the Wild pulled away as Brian Roloson and Pavol Demitra both scored to give the Wild the 2 goal lead. The Flames couldn't come back from that as the Wild took the game, 4-2. The Flames are now sitting in 8th spot in the Western Conference while the Wild is 7th.
