Yesterday, as Hockey Night in Canada took place on CBC, there were many playoff spots to be taken over and a rematch of a Stanley Cup final that took place 3 years ago.
In the 1st Canadian game of the night, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Ottawa Senators.
The Leafs came into the game knowing that the Rangers had already gotten point to help them in the playoff race, so the Leafs had to earn at least 1 point and the Sens were sitting comfortably in 4th place in the Eastern Conference. The Leafs also had Kyle Wellwood coming back after missing 33 games with a sports hernia.
The game started like most Sens - Leafs games as Ottawa took the lead with 6 minutes remaining in the 1st period. Then in the 2nd the Sens scored again to take a 2-0 lead. After the teams exchanged goals near the end of the period, the Senators had the lead 3-1. But in the 3rd the Leafs staged a comeback. Boyd Devereaux fired in his 4th just 9:00 into the period. And then, Nik Antropov potted his 13 to tie it up. After that, the game remained scoreless until overtime. In O.T, Pavel Kubina and Darcy Tucker broke out on a 2 0n 1 rush. The puck came to Tucker and he wired it passed Emery to win the game. "It's our biggest two points of the season," Tucker said. "I don't want to give you cliches, but that's what it comes down to". The Leafs are now 9th in the Eastern Conference and the Sens are still in 4th.
In another game, the Calgary Flames faced the Tampa Bay Lightning in a rematch of the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals.
The game started of slowly as the teams exchanged goals throughout the 1st and2nd. In the 3rd both teams came out with a sense of urgency as Craig Conroy and Vincent Lecavalier both scored for their teams in the period. The game went to overtime. In the extra frame, the Flames took 2 penalties in a row to give the Lightning a 2-man advantage. Tampa did not pass up this opportunity as Dan Boyle scored to give the Lightning the win. Tampa is now 3rd in the Eastern Conference and the Flames are sitting comfortably in 8th spot in the Western Conference with a 9 point lead over 9th place Colorado.
In the final Canadian game of the night, the Montreal Canadiens faced the ST.Louis Blues.Montreal started out strong as they scored 2 in the 1st courtesy of Steve Begin and Maxim Lapierre. Then in the 2nd, Montreal added to their lead as Latendresse scored his 13th of the year. Then the Blues comeback started. Before the 2nd ended, Doug Weight potted one to cut the Habs lead to 2 goals. Then, in the 3rd, ST.Louis scored 2 more to tie it up. One of those goals was scored with just 17:52 left in regulation. But the Habs did not back down as they took back the lead just 43 seconds after ST.Louis tied it. The Blues could not come back again as the Habs took this 4-3. The Canadiens are now 11th in the Eastern Conference and the Blues are 10th in the Western Conference.
